Rita

IT’S BEEN ANOTHER FRUSTRATING DAY. IT SEEMS ALL I GOT DONE WAS paperwork and a few calls on my other cases. My radio on my windowsill is playing an old Neil Young ballad, one you rarely hear anymore. I listen as my tired brain drifts.

“Rita?” Lauren jars me back to earth. I jump up, kill the radio.

“Yeah. What?”

Lauren closes my door and sits in the chair across from my desk. I plant myself back in my seat. “What’s up?”

“Geno Lewis was just arrested.”

“Again? Okay.” He’s one of our regulars. But something’s up. Lauren’s brown eyes are actually twinkling.

“He was caught trying to sell a stash of oxy in the parking lot of the Elm Tree Tavern.” Probably the shabbiest and least reputable establishment in Graybridge. “The owner called in about a suspicious person lurking outside. Uniforms made the arrest.” She leans back, folds her hands together. “He’s looking at real time this go-round.”

“And?”

“He says he bought the pills from Ray Ridley.”
